Maimuna’s story
Maimuna has faced unimaginable horror. Her village in Myanmar was burned to the ground one night when conflict erupted. Heavily pregnant, she fled for her life with her husband and mother in fear of being persecuted for her beliefs.
It took them 20 days to reach the relative safety at Cox’s Bazar – a refugee camp in Bangladesh that currently supports many refugees, many of whom are women and children. But even then, Maimuna’s troubles were far from over.
With vivid memories of seeing her world be destroyed, Maimuna gave birth in a refugee camp with no medical assistance. She and her baby survived the birth, but malnutrition, trauma and being left with nothing but the clothes on their back meant her family’s futures remained dangerously uncertain.
Too many people like Maimuna and her family are fighting a daily battle with poverty and hardship.
