Fundraise for CARE Australia on Facebook

Setting up a Facebook fundraiser is a simple and quick process, with rewarding results!

Fundraising on Facebook is a great way to raise awareness and funds for a cause that is important to you. You can do this by dedicating a special occasion such as your birthday or anniversary to the cause, or by asking your friends and family to make a donation in lieu of a Christmas or wedding gift!

The following steps provide instruction on how to easily set up your fundraiser, offering tips and ideas to maximise interest among your friends and family and to successfully reach your fundraising target.

Getting started

To get started, you will need the following:

  • A name for your Facebook fundraiser – Jane is donating her birthday to CARE!
  • A target dollar amount – AUD $500
  • A timeframe – 7 days
  • An image – you can choose from our selection of provided imagery
  • Passion and commitment – be ambitious and dedicated to reaching your goal!

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1.

Open Facebook on your mobile or computer and navigate to ‘Fundraisers’, located under the main menu.

Step 2.

On the Fundraisers page, click ‘Raise Money’ or ‘Select Nonprofit’.

Step 3.

Enter CARE Australia to find and select our page.

Step 4.

Fill in the details for your fundraiser, keeping in mind that the more information you provide, the more likely people are to engage and contribute.

Choose amount

When setting your amount, consider the impact you would like your fundraiser to make, and share these details with your friends and family.

As a guide:

  • $313 Can help with water purification for one school in Papua New Guinea for one whole year
  • $575 can help fund one basic school library in Afghanistan, containing novels; study guides; magazines; books on science, history, language and mathematics; sports equipment; and laboratory equipment.
  • $690 can help fund a micro-grant allowing a female entrepreneur to start a small business in West Africa.
  • $1,035 can help provide training for an advanced placement (AP) teacher for one year in Somalia.

There’s no limit to how much impact you can make, so aim high!

Set the duration

Your fundraiser will default to 7 days, however you can select your own preferred dates. We recommend 7-14 days, to maintain momentum and keep your Facebook friends interested!

Step 5.

Choose a name

Think of a title that is impactful, clear and concise, and that will inspire your friends and family to donate. We recommend personalising it, so that your event is more noticeable and people are more likely to click on it.

  • I’m donating my 30th Birthday to CARE Australia
  • Help me raise funds to send a girl to school this Christmas

About the fundraiser

In this section, let your friends and family know why you are fundraising for CARE Australia. Talk about the cause, why it’s important to you and the impact everyone’s donation will make. Give personal stories and anecdotes to really inspire those closest to you. People will be more likely to support your fundraiser if they can clearly understand the ‘why’s’ and ‘how’s’.

Step 6.

Give context to your fundraiser by choosing a powerful image. We recommend choosing a photo that is high quality, emotive, attracts attention and helps people to see and understand more about the cause.

To help you out, we have provided a selection of CARE Australia imagery that you can use in your fundraiser. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to browse our image gallery.

Step 7.

Click ‘Create’ to make your fundraiser go live! Once it’s live, you can invite your Facebook friends by clicking ‘Invite Friends’. This is an easy way to spread the word about your fundraiser, and encourage your friends and family to get involved.

Step 8.

Kick things off and build momentum by making a donation! Other people may be more likely contribute because they can see that people already have. Trust and community is important when it comes to fundraising, so be sure to create a space where people understand the cause and feel comfortable donating their money. It also shows your commitment to the cause, which is great!

Fundraising Tips

Use emotive imagery – the more emotion you can portray through an image, the greater reaction you can inspire from a viewer. When an image tells a story and provides context, people will be much more likely to support your cause.

Include personal anecdotes and stories – tell your friends and family why you have chosen this cause, and why it is important to you. Sharing this information will inspire them to take an interest in the cause, and encourage them to donate.

Provide regular updates – keep your friends and family up to date with how the fundraiser is going. Almost hit your target? Tell them! Getting off to a slow start? Let them know! Posting comments in the fundraiser and on your personal page about the cause and your progress will remind people about your fundraiser, and encourage and inspire them to contribute.

Create a sense of urgency – with a short timeframe, people are often inspired to contribute straight away, rather than popping it on their to-do-list for later (and potentially forgetting!). As the final date approaches, remind your friends and family and keep a friendly (but urgent) countdown running.

Create momentum – once people start donating, it can create a snowball effect. Utilise this momentum and share updates, so people can see the progress and success of your fundraiser.

Help make the donation tangible – in the about section, provide real examples of how someone’s contribution can help a person in need. You can find this information on our website.

Promote in on Facebook – invite all of your Facebook friends to donate, share status updates, post on your Facebook stories, tag your friends etc. The further your spread it the more reach it will have!

And promote if off Facebook – use other social media accounts to share your fundraiser, such as Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. You can also share with your colleagues at work, your teachers at school, at your university, sports club, community centre etc.

Be creative and have fun! – Your energy and enthusiasm will inspire people around you to take an interest in and support your cause, so have fun with your fundraiser!

Thank your supporters – once your fundraiser is complete, be sure to thank the people who donated and share details about how much money you raised, and the impact that money has made. People will be happy to know the outcome and proud to hear how their contribution has made a difference.
